Nine Healthy Ways To Enjoy The Holidays With Less Stress And Fat.
1. If you’re having relatives for dinner during the Holiday Season, meet them at the door with a decoratively trimmed basket containing slips of paper upon which you’ve written all the little things that need to be done before and after the meal. This could be setting the table, preparing appetizers, clearing the table, doing dishes, putting away leftovers and so on. Have each guest pick a slip and thereby become a participant in creating the festivities that allows you to enjoy the holiday more.
2. If you’re having guests bring a dish for dinner, suggest that they “low-fat” a favorite. Bet no one will even know and don’t tell anyone!
3. When preparing mashed potatoes, use organic vegetable or chicken broth instead of milk and butter. This eliminates many calories and adds a depth to the potatoes. You may want to roast chopped garlic to sprinkle on top of potatoes to give them a crunch and more flavor.
4. Send each of your guests home with a doggy bag. That will get most of the food out of your house so you won’t be tempted to eat when you’re not hungry.
5. If you use prepared stuffing mix, omit the butter or margarine. Again, no one will know the difference-except your waistline.
6. If you use turkey or roast pan drippings to make gravy, first pour the drippinto a jar and put into the freezer for ½-1 hour. This makes it easy to pull off the layer of fat from the top and discard it.
7. Take a brisk walk the morning of any holiday. This starts your day off with lots of energy and you won’t feel as guilty if you overeat. Walk or bike to your holiday gathering if possible.
8. Create new traditions. Reassess the way you spend your time during the Holiday Season. If you’re tired of watching “Uncle Joe” pass out after dinner, plan to spend your day somewhere else. Life is too short!
9. Remember, food is just one part of Holidays. Focus your attention on the lights, love, laughter and other aspects of the Holidays to get more out of this time of year and eat much less.
